The APNR Southern Ground-Hornbill Project, located in the Greater Kruger National Park, is dedicated to the preservation of the Southern Ground-Hornbill, an endangered species within South Africa. For 23 years, researchers from the FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology have been studying the birds’ habitat use, reproductive success, and behaviour, contributing significantly to our understanding of the species. Additionally, our project focuses on conservation efforts by installing artificial nests, due to a shortage of natural nesting sites caused by habitat changes. Currently, we monitor 30 nesting sites, with only four being natural. By providing artificial nests, we are helping to increase breeding frequency, encouraging population growth and expansion of the birds beyond our study area.
