In the heart of Djuma, Thandi, meaning “beloved” in Shangaan, the former queen of the region, is captured in a moment of contemplation. This particular photo was taken during a poignant time when Thandi, having experienced the loss of her second last litter of cubs, sought solace and strategy from atop a termite mound. Known for her grace and resilience, Thandi’s presence on the savannah was a source of admiration for many. Born in mid-December 2006 to the legendary Karula, she carried the lineage of Sabi Sands’ royalty, tracing back to her grandmother, Safari.

Throughout her life, Thandi was a symbol of strength, raising several litters despite the challenges posed by predators and rival males. Her known surviving cubs—Bahuti, Kuchava, Thamba, Tlalamba, and Maribye—each bear testament to her nurturing spirit and determination in the face of adversity.
