RIP Nhenhe – A Tragic Loss, A Call for Action

The recent, tragic passing of Nhenhe, a magnificent young leopard, has deeply saddened the conservation community and all who cherish the Sabi Sands – photographers, visitors and online viewers. It serves as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance within the wild and the critical importance of responsible human interaction.

This incident, has sparked a vital conversation within the broader safari and conservation community. It compels us to reflect on fundamental questions: Where do ethical guiding and ethical conservation truly come into play? Is the increasing social media emphasis on getting the ‘closest shot’ or the ‘most viral video’ always in the best interest of wildlife and the industry’s integrity?

We believe it’s essential to return to the core principles of safari: observing animals in their natural habitat, respecting their space, and fostering authentic connections to the wild. While certain conservation initiatives, such as dehorning or collaring, sometimes involve direct interaction for vital fundraising, we must continually ask ourselves: To what extent does this benefit the animal’s long-term well-being and the authenticity of the overall wildlife experience?

At Frame the Wild, we passionately believe that your memories of seeing animals thriving undisturbed, and the conservation funds generated from a classic, respectful safari, are the most powerful contributions we can make. We remain steadfast in our mission. The pain of Nhenhe’s loss is immense, but it only strengthens our resolve to continue fighting – for Nhenhe, Tavangumi, Hosana, Nyeleti, Hukumuri, and all the incredible creatures that call this wilderness home.

May action finally speak louder than words.

RIP Nhenhe. No more senseless deaths.
