A Tragic Loss in Kruger – But Hope Remains

Saving Africa’s Scavengers, One Vulture at a Time

Vultures might not be the most glamorous animals in the African bush, but they are among the most important. These aerial guardians are nature’s cleanup crew—preventing disease by consuming carrion that would otherwise rot and spread harmful bacteria.

But last week, Kruger National Park was struck by one of the largest vulture poisonings in Southern African history. A poisoned elephant carcass led to the deaths of 123 vultures, wiping out generations of a critically endangered species in mere hours.

The Fight to Save the Survivors

Thankfully, 83 vultures survived, thanks to the rapid efforts of conservationists. These survivors are now receiving emergency care at Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, an organization dedicated to saving Africa’s most vulnerable wildlife.
