A Visit to the Ground Hornbill Project: Conservation in Action

Our recent visit to the Ground Hornbill Project left us inspired and more committed than ever to wildlife conservation.

Located in Hoedspruit South Africa, this project is dedicated to the protection and rehabilitation of the critically endangered Southern Ground Hornbill, a remarkable bird known for its striking appearance and unique social behaviour.

 A Warm Welcome and Insightful Tour

Upon arrival, we were greeted by the passionate team Carrie and Kyle, who shared their wealth of knowledge about these incredible birds while driving between the various nesting sites. The Southern Ground Hornbill, with its distinctive red facial skin and booming call, plays a vital role in the ecosystem. However, due to habitat loss, the loss of nesting sites, poisoning, and other threats, their population has dramatically declined.

Hands-On Experience and Conservation Efforts

During our tour, we had the opportunity to see the conservation efforts in action. The project’s dedicated team works tirelessly to monitor these Ground Hornbills. We learned about their innovative breeding programs, which involve the careful monitoring of chicks, how they rescue the second chick, send them to another project rescue facility and the formation of new breeding groups to boost population numbers.

Engaging Activities and Educational Programs

The Ground hornbill project also runs educational programs to raise awareness about the importance of conserving Ground Hornbills and their habitats. They allow visitors to join in on their fieldwork to get a better insight into what they actually do and the importance thereof. We participated in a hands-on activity, climbing up to artificial nests already in the wild to see whether any eggs had been laid. Sitting at the first site a group of Hornbills was just starting their morning routine and hearing the loud low-calling sounds was amazing, as well as seeing them fly away with the large wingspans. Our last group even caught a snake that it would devour – Did you know that they swallow their prey hole?! It was a fulfilling experience, knowing that our efforts and the money donated to the Project through the trips you organise and join through Frame the Wild will contribute to the survival of this endangered species!
