Maribye: The Majestic Male Leopard of the Northern Sabi San

Meet Maribye, a young male leopard born in March 2020 in the Sabi Sands. His name, pronounced “Mariebs,” means ‘of the Rock,’ reflecting his strong beginnings and royal lineage. Raised by his mother, Thandi, Maribye’s early days were filled with exploration and discovery in his lush habitat. Thandi, known as the queen of Djuma, sadly passed away, making Maribye her last cub and a precious symbol of her legacy.

A Tale of Resilience

Recently, Maribye faced a severe challenge when he was caught in a poacher’s snare in the greater Kruger region. Found with a deep wound all around his body and emaciated, Maribye underwent two operations. Despite this ordeal, his resilience shone through as he made a remarkable recovery. The scar and a small spot still healing make him easily recognizable, marking his journey and strength.
