Visit to PNHF: The Fight Against Snares and Poaching

Our recent visit to the PNHF (Palaborwa National Heritage Foundation) was both eye-opening and heart-wrenching. Dedicated to combatting the devastating impact of poaching, PNHF works tirelessly to protect wildlife in the greater Kruger region. During our visit, we had the opportunity to join one of their daily snare sweeps—a crucial activity that helps to prevent and mitigate the suffering of countless animals.

In just one hour, within a relatively small radius, we managed to remove 29 snares. These horrific devices, often hidden and made from wire, are set by poachers to catch unsuspecting animals. The sight of these snares, and knowing the pain and suffering they inflict, was deeply unsettling. Most of these snares set are not for small prey anymore, it is there to catch larger animals like elephant, Rhino, buffalo, lion, hippo and even giraffe.

One of the most impactful moments of our visit was witnessing the dedication of the PNHF team as they shared stories of animals they had found caught in snares. The scenes they described as well as photos shared were nothing short of horrific, highlighting the urgent need for continued vigilance and intervention.

In addition to the snare sweep, we attempted to collar a hyena to monitor its movements and ensure its safety. Hyenas gets attracted by the carcasses that is as a result of snaring, and therefore monitoring these animals can give us a good indication of where the problem areas are in the bush. However, despite setting out bait and waiting patiently, no hyenas appeared. This absence is a troubling sign, underscoring the severe impact poaching has on wildlife populations in the area. It serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by conservationists and the pressing need for support and action.

Throughout our visit, we captured several photos that highlight the ongoing efforts and the stark realities faced by those on the frontlines of wildlife conservation.
