Hukumuri: The Tale of a Resilient Leopard

Hukumuri was born in the Kruger National Park in 2013. In the heart of the Sabi Sands, years later where the wilderness thrives and nature’s drama unfolds, His life became a symbol of survival and struggle, captivating the hearts of many safari-goers.

Hukumuri’s journey began as he claimed his territory in the northwestern Sabi Sands, fathering cubs like Cara and Ndzutini. His majestic presence was a highlight for those fortunate enough to witness him in his prime.

However, Hukumuri’s path was fraught with challenges near the end of his life.. He lost sight in his right eye, faced pressure from rival males, and experienced displacement. His story took a tragic turn due to human-wildlife conflict, resulting in his death in February 2021.

The Mpumalanga Parks and Tourism Authority (MPTA) confirmed that Hukumuri was shot by the staff of the Manyeleti Game Reserve. This decision was a last resort after multiple attempts to catch him under challenging circumstances. Hukumuri was shot in a village a few kilometres north of the Sabi Sands Game Reserve, some 200 meters west of the Manyeleti fenceline, after killing several goats, pigs, and at least one dog in the community outside of the Greater Kruger area.

Despite the community’s frustration, they did not take matters into their own hands but called the conservation authorities. Many villagers around the game reserves face challenges with livestock loss and a perceived lack of compensation. The potential for conflict is high, with no buffer zone between the fence and the villages.
